Netflix has hundreds of projects in development at any one time, and over the years we’ve seen the streaming service get some notable video game IPs to turn into shows and movies. Here’s your up-to-date guide to all the video game adaptations on Netflix or coming soon to Netflix.

With the streaming wars heating up, IP has become a valuable commodity and when it comes to a service like Netflix that doesn’t have much of that commodity, they’ve turned to video games for help. That’s despite the fact that Hollywood hasn’t adapted video game intellectual property. necessarily had the best of reputations.

In one way or another, Netflix works with almost every video game publisher in the industry. Here is a list of all publishers from which projects have been announced or are available:

assassin’s Creed

A live-action adaptation based on the acclaimed assassin’s Creed The franchise was announced in October 2020 as part of Ubisoft’s overall deal with Netflix. Very little is known about the project, except that Ubisoft Film’s Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik will executive produce the project.

Jeb Stuart, at one point, served as an executive producer for the series, but has since left.

Tom Clancy’s iconic spy thriller is coming to Netflix as an animated series with john wick writer Derek Kolstad leading development. According to Varietythe series has received a contract for two seasons and 16 episodes on Netflix.

The iconic Lara Croft will once again embark on adventures uncovering mysteries and looting tombs.

Legendary Entertainment is working with Netflix on a new tomb Raider anime series written by The Witcher: Origin of Blood writer Tasha Huo. DJ2, a company specializing in animated films and television series, will also work on Netflix tomb Raider.

By partnering with 2K, Take-Two and Vertigo Entertainment, Netflix will develop the beloved bioshock franchise in a movie.

Details are extremely scant, with no plot details available. We know francisco lorenzo (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, I’m legendNetflix Dreamland) he’s on board to steer.


Beyond Good and Evil

Netflix announced a live-action adaptation of the popular Ubisoft game Beyond Good and Evil in July 2020.

from netflix Beyond Good and Evil will be directed by Detective Pikachu director Rob Letterman. Jason Altman and Margaret Boykin are producing for Ubisoft Film & Television.

Unfortunately, since July 2020, there has been no new news on the project, and the movie may suffer from the same problems as the game.

Ryan Reynolds was originally announced to be on board with this live action feature film that was first announced in March 2020.

The game itself is from the 1980s and is considered one of the retro greats. Originally, Don Bluth, Gary Goldman and Jon Pomeroy were also supposed to produce.

Fast forward almost three years; there has been very little development available to the public on the project.

An animated project was funded on Indiegogo with Don Bluth involved, but has yet to come to fruition.


The division

Another production based on the works of Tom Clancy, The division It will come to Netflix as a feature film. Directed by Deadpool 2It’s David Leitch. The division will star in Hollywood A-Listers like Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain.

The division It will follow the same basic story as the game it is based on. It is set in the near future when a devastating virus is unleashed on the citizens of New York City on Black Friday. The virus, spread through paper money, kills millions within the city, and what little remains of society has been thrown into chaos. A group of highly-trained agents are tasked with breaking into New York City and saving any potential survivors.

Currently, there are no production dates on The division, but if all goes well, production can start in the next few months. We have even more on this, so read everything we know about The division.


Far away & Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix

Coming to Netflix as part of Ubisoft’s many titles is an anime series based on the Far away series and what is also technically a spin-off title, which will incorporate many Ubisoft licenses.

Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix it is produced by Adi Shankar and features «alter egos of Ubisoft characters in a much-referenced homage to the early ’90s.»


Pokemon

Netflix has gone exclusive Pokemon content for a while now, and that will continue with Season 24 (but only in the US) starting in September 2021.

Also, the co-showrunner of LuciferJoe Henderson is also working on an adaptation of the live-action Pokémon television series.

Pokémon received a live-action adaptation before, with Pokémon Detective Pikachu released in 2019, which was distributed by Warner Brothers.

Horizon Zero Dawn The open-world adventure game came from Sony Interactive’s Netherlands-based studio Guerilla Games. Set in a tribal world, the story follows Aloy as he discovers his destiny by facing off against dinosaur-like machines among creatures.

A live-action adaptation was reportedly in early development on Netflix starting in May 2022.

Along with the fact that Netflix Games would be bringing a new version of the game through its game offering, the fact that we will be getting a TV series based on the card game was announced.

The television adaptation project was announced in April 2022. King of the hill creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels serving as executive producers. Matthew Inman and Shane Kosakowski serve as showrunners.


Gears of war

In November 2022, in conjunction with the 16th anniversary of the video game franchise, came the news that Netflix was developing two projects based on Gears of war with developer The Coalition working on the project.

According to the original announcement:

«Netflix will first adapt the video game franchise into a live-action film, followed by an adult animated series, with the potential for more stories to follow.»


Other rumored video game projects

  • A Zelda The series was in development at Netflix once, but Nintendo reportedly axed the project.
  • A Supervision Y Devil It has long been rumored that the Activision Blizzard project will be attached to Netflix.
  • A God of War The series based on the franchise of the same name is rumored to be in development at Netflix, but has since been sold to Amazon Studios.
  • Devil can cry – An animated series based on Capcom’s popular fantasy franchise of the same name has been announced in 2018but unfortunately news about Netflix Devil can cry it has been in short supply ever since. castlevania series creator Adi Shankar is set to develop Devil can cry too. In an interview with IGN, Shankar said that Devil can cry «will join Castlevania in what we now call the pirate multiverse.»
  • A Final Fantasy The series used to be listed here, but after further investigation, Netflix’s involvement is not confirmed for any Finals. Fantasy XIV Sony and Hivemind television project.
  • As well as the adaptations for fragmented cell Y cyberpunk mentioned above, there have been reports that there could be live-action adaptations for them as well.

Netflix isn’t the only streamer getting into video game intellectual property.

Amazon Prime has been busy picking up video game licenses, recently announcing that it would be the streaming service to create a TV series centered around Bethesda. Fall out Serie.

HBO also took a big step last year with the announcement that The last of us would get the TV treatment.
