“Hopefully we will go into production sometime next year. We have our main financier, Film4, and then we are going to get more financing from other partners, we have one more draft before we do that. But we have a lot of interest because Daniel Kaluuya stars in it and was also in Get Out, which was a great success this summer, and anyway we have always had a lot of interest from Sundance, they have been wanting us and pushing us to achieve it.

This could indicate that the film will have a limited theatrical release on January 12 and then it will land on Netflix. a week later, on January 19. Stay tuned.

Netflix did not respond to multiple requests for comment on the release date of The kitchen.

In October 2023, the film had its world premiere at the closing gala of the BFI London Film Festival. Festival director Kristy Matheson said in a statement about the premiere:

“Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya have made a film that totally exceeds our expectations of contemporary British cinema. The Kitchen offers many possibilities to audiences: essential social politics and high-octane energy gel are perfect for creating an electrifying experience on the big screen. “We couldn’t be more excited to close the festival with this groundbreaking film set in near-future London that showcases this incredibly talented team who call this city home.”

What were the criticisms for? The kitchen?

Given its premiere at a film festival, it gave critics a chance to see the film and reviews were generally positive.

At the time of the November 2023 update, the film has an 83% on RottenTomatoes.

Leila Latif for IGN said: “With a powerful lead performance from Kane Robinson, striking aesthetics and witty dialogue, the 98-minute run runs with aplomb and its ending packs a punch.”

Meanwhile, Kevin Maher for the Times He wasn’t that interested, gave it two stars out of 5 and said:

“The Kitchen, with its amazing conceptual environment, would have laid the foundation for a top-notch video game. Or perhaps a detailed virtual reality gallery installation. But as a movie, and especially as a drama, it doesn’t work.”

I also managed to attend the opening night, but I didn’t really feel like it. It is a visually impressive film that does not move forward when necessary and, despite the good performances of the protagonists, it did not achieve the emotional landing that it expected.
