change of tide (fish tail for Portuguese speakers) will be back for more on Netflix with a Season 2 order announced today by Netflix Portugal.

Loosely based on a true story, change of tide was released on Netflix globally in the May 2023 schedule with all seven episodes arriving on May 26, 2023.

Created by Augusto Fraga, the show follows a man named Eduardo who sees an opportunity to make a lot of money after a drug-laden ship washes up on his home island. The broad cast of the show includes José Condessa, Helena Caldeira, André Leitão, Rodrigo Tomás, Maria João Bastos, Albano Jerónimo and Afonso Pimentel.

Now, less than a month after the series first debuted on Netflix, it’s been confirmed that the show will return for another batch of episodes. It’s likely, as we’ve seen with some other shows lately, that a renewal order came early and we’re only now learning publicly about the future.

In a statement provided to outlets in Portugal, Augusto Fraga said (translated from Portuguese):

“Eduardo’s story could not end like this. For all the people who were moved, laughed and suffered with that group of friends from ‘Rabo de Peixe’, we promise an exciting and surprising second season. I feel very proud of the attention we receive, in the Azores, in the rest of the country and far beyond our borders. Once again, Portuguese talent will fill Netflix screens around the world.»

Was change of tide A local success or a global success? Well, the answer seems locally biased, but that’s not to say the program didn’t break out in other countries.

So far, the show has appeared in Netflix’s global top 10 for two weeks racking up 19.89 million hours so far, though it looks like it may disappear for the week ending June 18:

FlixPatrol data which looks at the top 10 daily movies and series from 89 countries around the world shows that the show performed best in Portugal (it runs for 19 days and counting) and also did well in other European territories like Spain and Italy.

While it has charted in the top 10 in Latin American countries like Brazil, it has not defied expectations.
