Getting called up to the big leagues is the dream of every young MLB prospect, and Chicago White Sox outfielder Oscar Colas found out he made the team in spring training.

Trying to understand all the hard work that had led him to this point, he knew who he had to tell the big news to besides his teammates.

His mother.

The White Sox posted the moment Colas learned the big news, and was surprised when a camera panned on him after leaving an office. With a big smile on his face, he said in Spanish, «I still can’t believe it.»

After hugging a couple of teammates and letting them know he’s traveling with them to Houston for the season opener against the Astros on Thursday, Luis Robert Jr. told him what to do.

«Call your mom,» Robert said.

Colas’s mother was quick to reply.

«Mom, I made the team,» says Colas just as his face appears on the screen.

Upon hearing that news, tears of joy immediately came to her eyes.

«Oh my God, I was praying to God about that! Oh, I’m going to cry. Thank God, that’s great. Congratulations son, congratulations,» he shouts in Spanish.

The 24-year-old earned his spot after hitting .262 with three home runs, six RBIs and 17 hits in 65 at-bats during spring training.

He is expected to be the team’s starting right fielder after beating Gavin Sheets in their spring training contest. Andrew Benintendi joined Robert in the outfield after signing with Chicago as a free agent, and Eloy Jimenez is expected to play primarily as a designated hitter.

The White Sox signed Colas to a $2.7 million contract in January 2022 after he spent three years splitting time between his home country’s Cuban National Series and the 2017-2019 Japan Western League.

Colas sped his way through the minors last year, starting at High-A and ending the year at Triple-A.

Among the three teams last season, Colas slashed .314/.371/.524, including a 31-12 season at Triple-A with two home runs, two doubles and four RBIs in seven games. That earned him an invite to spring training and he didn’t waste it.

Now that he’s on the team, Colas’ mom knows it’s a long journey ahead, so she gave him some advice.
