When Minnesota Vikings wide receiver KJ Osborn sat in his Uber in Austin, Texas on Sunday night, he never thought he’d be coming home a hero.

Osborn revealed on ESPN «The Adam Schefter Podcast» who helped save a man from a burning car as he was returning home from a night out with friends on Sunday.

Osborn was training in Austin, and as his time there was drawing to a close, he wanted to have a night out with his coach, Detroit Lions running back D’Andre Swift, and others before moving on. But that fun night quickly turned into a dramatic scene when their Uber driver noticed a car crash prompting both of them to spring into action to help the driver out of the burning vehicle.

«It’s a situation I never imagined in a billion years,» Osborn began to tell Schefter. «But I’m on my way home, I’m in the back of an Uber, my head is down, and I’m on my phone, on my way home. My Uber driver starts freaking out. It’s like, ‘Oh my gosh. ! Oh my gosh!» I look up, and I wonder what the fuss is about and there’s no one on the street. He’s like, ‘This guy crashed,’ and I look to my right and there’s a car, if you had to imagine , under a bridge pillar. His car is straight ahead. He hit the pillar and his car is on fire.»

«At first, my Uber driver, who is also a hero, there were three other people there. All heroes. He got out of the car and said, ‘We need to call 911, talk to 911.'» I’m like, ‘No, we have to go save this guy.

Osborn said that he himself, his uber driver and another man and a woman were present at the scene to help the man out of the car. Of course, Osborn was a bit reserved at first because he was a car on fire; at any moment, it could have exploded.

But instinct kicked in and everyone present began talking to the man, trying to get him to move into the passenger seat so they could drag him out.

Once he was outside, Osborn lifted the man up and they all walked away from the burning car.

“We got him out of the car and that’s when I picked him up, and he’s bleeding all over my shirt and everything. I pick it up and carry it like 10, 15 yards because that way we’re a little bit far from the car. . By then, the ambulance arrived. Firefighters managed to put out the flames. The car was fine. The cops got his information and everything, and they came back and told us, ‘You saved that man’s life.'»

Osborn is currently studying at the University of Miami for his master’s degree in criminal justice, as he said he has plans to become part of the FBI or Secret Service after his playing days. This situation was one that he saw as something that could be part of that job description in the future if he ever fully pursued it, which has since given him a lot of perspective.

Since then, Osborn has been in contact with the man he saved, as well as those who helped the cause. He plans to go to the hospital to check on him, adding that he suffered an ankle injury and was bleeding from his lip.

Very minor injuries considering the circumstances.

Osborn is still trying to process what happened Sunday night, including the fact that he missed his first Uber before getting on the one that got him into this situation. He doesn’t think the man will survive if he and the others aren’t there.

«I’m grateful that I was in a position to help him and the other three heroes to be there.»
