The Oakland A’s move to Las Vegas isn’t as certain as it seemed.

Now it’s very up in the air.

A four-month legislative session of Nevada lawmakers adjourned Monday night without a vote on a stadium bill for the A’s.

Lawmakers failed to pass the budget bill that included more than $1 billion to fund capital improvement projects that fund state public works and construction. The measure failed in the Senate after time ran out for a second vote after disagreements between the parties dragged on Monday night until the midnight deadline.

Most of the public funding for the $1.5 billion retractable-roof stadium would have come from $380 million in public assistance, in part through $180 million in transferable tax credits and $120 million in county bonds: taxpayer-backed loans for help finance projects and a special District tax around the stadium. The sponsors have promised that the district will generate enough money to pay those bonds and interest.

A move to Las Vegas has been under consideration for nearly a year now, with MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred even saying at one point that the move was all but inevitable.

«For a while, we were on parallel paths (with Oakland), but we’ve turned our attention to Las Vegas to get the A’s deal here and find a long-term home,» A’s president Dave said last month. Kaval. «Oakland has been a great home to us for more than 50 years, but we really need to complete this 20-year saga, and we believe there is a way here in southern Nevada to do that.»

«We support the A’s focusing on Las Vegas and hope they bring finality to this process by the end of the year,» Manfred said.

In April, the A’s signed a binding agreement to purchase 49 acres of land for a new ballpark, but a new deal with other land reportedly occurred as public funding was cut from $500 million to $395 million.

It remains to be seen when a vote will be cast, but Gov. Joe Lombardo said he would call a special session to do so. The Nevada Independent says that Lombardo «[dictate] the agenda, although neither Lombardo’s office nor legislative leadership have confirmed that a special session would be held beginning Monday night.»

The proposed stadium would seat 35,000 and have a retractable roof, and the A’s remain hopeful that it will open in 2027. The A’s current stadium’s lease ends next year.
