Jully Black, a legendary Canadian singer-songwriter, was given the chance to sing Canada’s national anthem at the NBA All-Star Game on Sunday night in Salt Lake City.

Black, however, made a one-word change to the song in an effort to acknowledge the indigenous people.

«Oh Canada! Our home in our native land,» he sang in front of the thousands of attendees. The original lyrics of the song read: «Our home and native land.»

Black received praise for the change.

The Toronto native has collaborated with a number of artists including Nas, Destiny’s Child and Sean Paul throughout her career, with several of her records and collaborations achieving CRIA Certified Gold or CRIA Certified Platinum.

“We have been singing this hymn since kindergarten. And now, in the last three years, especially with indigenous rights and what’s happening in our country and history and learning, I’m learning too,» Black explained to TSN’s The Shift. . “So I went up to some indigenous friends and said, ‘First of all, how do you feel about me doing this anthem?’ And I got some feedback.

«I really went through the lyrics to sing it on purpose because I know it’s like my name.»
