Wrexham AFC, the Wales-based soccer team owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, didn’t hold back when they faced a US women’s soccer team during the inaugural soccer tournament last weekend in South Carolina. North.
Both teams consisted of current, former and special wild card players from Wrexham and USWNT respectively, with the men riding to a final score of 12-0 to win and proceed to the next round.
Seven of those goals were netted in 20 minutes, as Wrexham scored early and went on to win.

Why was Wrexham trying so hard? This first tournament had a grand prize of $1 million, so it didn’t matter that the score went unbalanced early.
The women’s team failed to get a goal on the scoreboard with just five shot attempts on target, while Wrexham had 39 scoring chances.

Soccer legend Mia Hamm managed the 7-on-7 team, while retired standouts Heather O’Reilly and Lori Lindsey were on the field for the women’s national team.
«We’re super proud,» O’Reilly told NBC Sports after the game despite the tough box score. «Hopefully we’ve shown anybody to just move on, just live. What’s the worst that could happen? We lose 16-0 to Wrexham? We don’t care because we’re living, we’re being bold and we’re being brave. Here we have two amazing products that football fans are rooting for. It’s so much fun and it’s brought us all together.»
This tournament put a new spin on soccer, as there were no offsides, ties, tackles, and other rules that are not traditional on the pitch.
But Wrexham couldn’t even make it to the million dollar prize at the end of the tournament.
Instead it was Newtown Pride FC who won it all over SLC FC on Sunday.
While this women’s team gave it their all at this local tournament, the real squad continues to prepare for the Women’s World Cup in July. They have one more warm-up match against Wales before the group stage kicks off in Australia and New Zealand.
