Boston Red Sox star Chris Sale is reportedly coming to the rescue of a teammate’s wallet after a national anthem showdown with an opposing pitcher cost him a game and several dollars.
Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Matt Strahm and his former Red Sox teammate Kutter Crawford were ejected and fined because their fun matchup went too far on Saturday. The referees had to send off both players after receiving a warning that they would be sent off if they did not return to their respective benches.

Since Crawford is on the 15-day disabled list right now, his penalty for being ejected is much higher than Strahm’s, but Red Sox manager Alex Cora said he’ll get some help from a certain teammate. .
NESN’s Tom Caron explained that Sale would come to the rescue to help pay the fine.
«The fines go up if you’re on the disabled list, so it was a hefty fine for Crawford,» Caron said Sunday during the Red Sox-Phillies telecast. «Word is that a teammate from Florida Gulf Coast University named Chris Sale is going to take care of that. Strahm played for the Red Sox last season after spending four years with the San Diego Padres. Crawford is in his third season with Boston.
Speaking to Audacy’s «Baseball Isn’t Boring» podcast, Strahm explained the entire situation that resulted in not only an ejection, but also a fine from the league.
«Zero of that was planned,» he explained. «The anthem was over, I looked away and Kutter gave me kind of a smile. And I knew exactly what that smile meant, so I just stood there. Zero plan on that. We just locked eyes after the anthem and we both we still had our hat on.» over our hearts and none of us moved.
