Spiranac revealed that she and Clark participated in junior golf together in Colorado and that there was something about him that she and those around them knew would translate into a winner.

«Wyndham Clark and I grew up playing junior golf together in Colorado,» Spiranac tweeted. «Everyone always said he had something special and we all knew he would make it. Now he’s a big winner! Great timing.»

Clark was born in Denver and was a classmate of current San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey. He has twice won the Colorado State Golf Championship.

Clark previously missed the cut at the other two US Open tournaments he played. He finished tied for 75th at the 2021 PGA Championship and tied for 76th at The Open Championship last year.

He took home $3.6 million for his troubles.

«I feel like I belong on this stage,» Clark said afterwards. «Even two or three years ago, when people didn’t know who I was, I felt like I could still play and compete against the best players in the world.»

The victory came six weeks after he won the Wells Fargo Championship, his first PGA Tour victory.

«It’s gone faster than I thought as far as starting to do some things mentally that I’ve never done before, but I feel like I’m one of the best players in the world,» he added. «Obviously this just shows what I think can happen.»
