There was speculation that Goodell’s 2017 extension would be his last, especially after the tumultuous process he went through. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones even threatened to sue the league, which ultimately resulted in a fine.

Goodell, however, has kept the peace between owners and players after facilitating the league’s collective bargaining agreement, which was ratified in 2020 and runs through the 2023 season. That includes changes to the league’s revenue distribution, increases in player health and benefits, as well as security improvements.

It also led the league to add an additional game to the regular season.

Goodell’s efforts also helped in the billions of dollars earned for the media rights to Fox, CBS, NBC, ESPN, Amazon and now YouTube, which will have the league’s Sunday Ticket package for the games.

However, Goodell’s tenure has not been easy. Player safety continues to be a major concern for the league, particularly in the area of concussion. While the NFL was slow to acknowledge the effects the game has had on current and former players, recent cases, including the situation with Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa last season, have generated more controversy within the sport. regarding the correct steps taken when boss injuries occur.
