With the 95th Academy Awards in the rearview mirror, there are now eight months of releases left before the next round of Oscar nominations is improvised. While some outlets have already started making lists of predictions for the upcoming ceremony, it’s only spring 2023, and multiple factors will play into various chances of movies opening this year making the final shortlist of nominees.
We already have a pretty good idea of what Netflix is offering in 2023 with its slate almost settled, though more titles could be added as the months go by throughout the year. But we will try to point out some titles that stand out or have great potential for the upcoming awards season.

A police thriller from director DaVine Yates, best known for directing most of the Potterverse movies. Depending on the reviews, the story seems like it might be interesting enough to get critics’ attention. The pharmaceutical drama also boasts an impressive cast with Emily Blunt, Chris Evans, Catherine O’Hara, Chloe Coleman, Jay Duplass, Brian D’Arcy James, Amit Shah, and Andy Garcia.
Losing her job, a blue-collar woman struggling to raise her daughter takes a job at a failing pharmaceutical company, only to become involved in a dangerous organized crime scheme.

Filmmaker David Fincher returns to Netflix after his Hollywood film Mank garnered ten nominations with winning statuettes for production design and cinematography. As Fincher adapts a French graphic novel with The Killer and wades into the waters of the genre, it’s hard to downplay the director’s ability to elevate any material he touches.

Bradley Cooper’s directing continuation after the massive success of A star has been born he’s automatically been cooked up awards bait since the jump after his latest film garnered eight nominations and walked away with Best Song for Lady Gaga.
Cooper will work behind the camera and play Leonard Bernstein in solid vintage makeup in the biopic. The only problem that could arise is if Netflix bounces it back to 2024, as it does with all movies without fixed 2023 release dates.

Regina King plays the iconic American political figure Shirley Chisholm and also puts on one of the final performances by the late Lance Reddick. Written and directed by John Ridley, who previously won an Oscar for his fantastic adapted screenplay for the Best Picture winner, directed by Steve McQueen, 12 Years a Slave.
There’s a lot of potential here, as King won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 2019 for her performance in If Beale Street Could Talk and her directorial debut One Night In Miami has also garnered three nominations in the past. There’s a lot of love for King and Ridley, that’s for sure.

The civil rights drama comes from director George C. Wolfe, who previously directed Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. That film ended up with five nominations, including a posthumous Best Actor nomination for Chadwick Boseman. Therefore, he is certainly one to watch out for.

An adaptation of Roald Dahl The wonderful story of Henry Sugarman Expected to be Wes Anderson’s second film to be released in 2023, that other film is Asteroid City at Focus Features/Universal Pictures.
Benedict Cumberbatch will play Henry Sugar with Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, Rupert Friend and Richard Ayoade in other unnamed roles. It’s hard to gauge at first glance whether the film will be worthy of award consideration. Still, it’s hard to ignore that. The real Tenenbaums, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise Kingdomand isle of dogs they were able to get nominations in the past.
The Grand Budapest Hotel it was Anderson’s biggest Oscar contender, earning nine nominations and four statuettes with wins for technical achievement along with composer Alexandre Desplat’s quirky original score.

When it comes to animation, movies that aren’t from Disney or Pixar are harder to predict if they’ll end up receiving nominations, and even harder when you don’t know how good a movie really is.
the case with Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget it has a strong track record from the animation studio behind it, Aardman Animations, known as the best stop-motion dogs in claymation. WAllace & Gromit: The Curse of the Rabbit-Man won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature in 2006, along with The Pirates! On an adventure with the scientists!, shaun the sheep, A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon landing nominations in their respective years.
It also doesn’t hurt that Netflix recently won this award with Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.

Future acquisitions could also affect current predictions or listings, as streamers like Netflix fund their own originals and look to film festivals/markets for new content throughout the year.
Not to mention the movies that distributors or studios want to ditch when they regret a limited or wide theatrical release. Taking places like Amazon, Apple, Hulu, and Netflix, it will potentially pick up even more stragglers along the way.
It’s worth mentioning that with all of this being said, the actual awards predictions won’t pay off until the nominations are announced and we get closer to the actual show, as other awards ceremonies are a big part of determining who the frontrunners are. . There could also be titles that stand out more as the months go by and Netflix promotional campaigns kick in along with critical reactions and in-depth reviews.
