Welcome to your weekly roundup of the biggest stories from Netflix’s top 10 hourly figures for the week ending January 29, 2023.
Every Tuesday, Netflix updates its Top 10 Stats page with 40 new figures per hour for the top movies and shows from the past seven days. If you want to easily browse the top 10 hourly data, visit our tool.
Note: In this report of Netflix hours watched from January 23, 2023 to January 29, 2023, we will use «Full View Equivalent» or CVE, expressed in millions. That means we divide the hours watched advertised by Netflix by the running time of the movies or series. It allows for better comparisons between movies and series, but it is not an audience metric. It is the minimum number of viewings if they were all complete from the first second to the last of the movie or season.
one. Your people makes a perfect comedy movie pitch.
The comedy directed by Eddie Murphy Your people got off to a very good start last week with 28.3 million CVEs in its first three days. It is the third best pitch for an American comedy opening on a Friday, just behind Personal time Y Last year and far beyond what A Madea Homecoming did last year in January. You can see 70-80 million CVEs running in its first 28 days, making it compatible with the sequel. However, it’s worth noting that Kenya Barris did. get out of his contract with Netflix.
2. lockwood and company you still have reason to wait for a renewal
I have some good news and some bad news regarding lockwood and company. Let’s start with the bad news: with just 4.4 million CVEs in its first three days, that’s really low for a new English-language series.
But here’s the good news: it’s also on the high end of a British young adult series, beyond what you’d expect. stopshearts did (the series was renewed) and twice the debut numbers of mean bad (this series was cancelled). So there’s hope, but the series will need to pick up the pace in its second week, and let’s hope Netflix UK has a different set of requirements for its series renewals compared to its US studio equivalent.
3. that 90s show could be renewed. Or not.
let’s go back to that 90s show which ends its second week with 17.3 million CVEs. Now, if it were any other flashy new American series with a fairly high budget, I’d guess it would be canceled quickly.
But That 90s Show is a sitcom (and it’s not expensive), and that probably calls for different standards, especially considering that Netflix needs sitcoms on its service and the earlier ones hardly make the weekly Top 10. Compare its numbers to other American shows that premiered last year, we can see that it’s currently in the cancellation zone, but I wouldn’t rule out a renewal for that one. The completion rate will be important, as will the cost.
Four. ginny and georgia is Netflix’s first big hit of 2023.
There are series that lose audience from one season to another, and then there is Ginny And Georgia, proving again this week that the success of its first season was quite real and not a fluke.
After 25 days, the second season registered almost 52 million CVEs, while the first season reached 42.5 million CVEs after 28 days. I assume a multi-season renewal is being discussed at Netflix.
5. Some success in regional programming this week
Let’s take a closer look at the success of regional programming this week starting with the Norwegian war movie. narvik. It broke the record for the highest launch of any movie released on a Monday on Netflix with 20.9 million CVEs for the first seven days.
The second great success of this week comes from Spain with the limited series the snow girl, which achieved the best launch of all the Spanish series released on Friday with 7.1 million CVEs, well above welcome to eden (which was renovated).
In Latin America, the Brazilian limited series the endless night also did wonders with 7.9M CVE in five days, the best launch for any series coming from Latin America and launching on a Wednesday, surpassing hunch (which was also renovated).
Finally, in Asia, the second season of ragnarok record made the best launch for a Japanese animated series released on a Thursday with 7.2 million CVEs. More episodes are coming this year.
6. the recruit renewed for a second season.
In closing, we heard this week that The Recruit had been renewed for a second season. Looking at the numbers and comparing it to the other new US series released in 2022, the revamp makes sense, but almost. Well done The Recruit, you completed your mission. However, season 2 will have to do better.
