Welcome to your weekly roundup of the biggest stories from Netflix’s top 10 figures per hour for the week ending April 23, 2023. This week we’ll cover A tour guide to love, the diplomat, Forest ranger, Whitney Houston: I want to dance with someone, Hunger, the agent of the night, the marked heart, welcome to eden and Love is blind. It’s safe to say it’s a bumper issue.
Every Tuesday, Netflix updates its Top 10 Stats page with 40 new figures per hour for the top movies and shows from the past seven days. If you want to easily explore the top 10 data by hour, check out our tool, which has just been updated with even more Nielsen top 10 data.
Note: In this report of Netflix hours watched from April 17, 2023 to April 23, 2023, we will use «Full View Equivalent» or CVE, expressed in millions. That means we divide the hours watched advertised by Netflix by the running time of the movies or series. It allows for better comparisons between movies and series, but it is not an audience metric. It is the minimum number of viewings if they were all complete from the first second to the last of the movie or season.
1. Hunger is a real hit for Netflix Asia.
Do you know which Asian Netflix movie became the most watched after 14 days?
No, it’s not an action movie like Carter either kill boksoon.
Nor is it a genre film like Jung_E either Kingdom: North Ashin.
It is a Thai drama set in the kitchen of a famous restaurant called Hunger, What we discussed last week. The film continued to perform very well in its third week and crossed the 30M CVE mark after 14 days, making it the most successful Asian Netflix film in our data set. It is currently ranked #9 in the Top 10 of all time for international films and is the only Asian film there.
Very (very) impressive.
2. A tour guide to love disappoints
One movie that doesn’t impress is the rom-com. A tour guide to love which launches with 8.4 million CVEs during its first weekend.
A very disappointing start for an American romantic comedy that stars Rachael Leigh Cook in search of love around the world.
3. the diplomat makes a mediocre debut.
The great premiere last week was the American series the diplomat starring Keri Russell, and its launch is pretty mediocre, with 8.6 million CVEs after four days.
is considerably less than the agent of the night or even 1899 but it’s also better than Beef (which, by the way, had a tremendous grip for its third week).
So I’m not optimistic about a renewal, but it will also depend on his performance over the next few weeks.
4. the agent of the night ends its first 28 days.
A series that did not disappoint is The Night Agent, which finished its first 28 days with a sixth place in the Top 10 historical series in English.
That’s already a great performance for this title, but it becomes even more impressive when we look at the best new series launch in English measured in CVE.
the agent of the night boasts the third best launch for a new English series after 28 days of delay Wednesday and Dahmer but right in front of Bridgerton, The vigilant, and The Wizard.
The future is bright for agent Peter Sutherland.
5. Season 4 of Love is blind upgrade season 3.
Weekly releases are a bit trickier to analyze than binge releases, which is why we didn’t mention Season 4 of Love is blind until this week as all the episodes are finally released.
With the ones we have now, we can compare their numbers to previous seasons in our data set.
As we can see here, season 4 did better than season 3, but not as well as season 2. The show ended with a bug after a technical glitch prevented Netflix from streaming the reunion live last week. also came under fire for the deal of candidates during the recording of the program.
Two major issues that might need to be addressed in Season 5.
6. A tale of two series: the returns of the marked heart and welcome to eden
I’m sure there must be a logical explanation as to why Netflix released the second season of two Hispanic shows two days apart in the same week, but I can’t help but feel like there might be viewership overlap between the two.
Anyway, the one who did well is the marked heartwith a pitch for its season 2 exactly along the lines of the pitch for its first season a year ago.
the marked heart It is already renewed for a third season, as it should be based on these numbers.
The same cannot be said of welcome to eden which returned with 3.4 million CVEs after three days, a 30% decrease compared to the Season 1 launch a year ago.
The prospect of a third season is unclear after this release, but we’ll see how the series progresses in the coming weeks.
7. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once and Forever
It is very difficult to compare the performance of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once and Forever because it is, on the one hand, a niche program but on the other hand it can also attract a lot of people; It’s not really a series, but it’s also not really a movie with its 55-minute runtime.
It launched with 7.1 million CVEs, and since it launched on a Wednesday, it’s hard to make apple-to-apple comparisons. Let’s just say it did a little less than the family movie release. night books.
8. I want to dance with someone is the latest Sony movie to hit Netflix US.
In the US, Netflix and Sony have a unique agreement (for Netflix) that sends all new Sony movies directly to Netflix after a certain period of time. Thus, Sony movies routinely manage to break into the Top 10 based solely on their performance on Netflix US. The latest example of that is Whitney Houston: I want to dance with someone, which launched on Netflix last Saturday and managed to garner 2.8 million CVEs in just two days in the US.
Now, we can compare that to other Sony movies released under the same deal in the US, and something quite interesting turns up.
There seems to be a direct correlation between its performance at the US box office and its performance on Netflix with Bullet train and where the locusts sing surpassing I want to dance with someone and Devotion both in theaters and streaming.
Now, it seems logical, but when we compare Nielsen streaming numbers in the US to other theatrical titles launching in their first window on other streaming services, there is no such direct correlation.
For example, on HBO Max, The menu ($38 million at the US box office) did more EVC during its first two weeks than “Elvis” ($151 million at the US box office).
on Disney+, Charm and Light-year were the two theatrical films that had the most CVEs during their release period on the service, both of which were considered underperforming or theatrical flops. It is too soon to conclude anything, but it is interesting to realize (and continue analyzing)!
