MLB umpire leaves hospital 2 days after receiving an 89mph header

MLB umpire Larry Vanover has been released from a hospital after spending a couple of nights there after being shot in the head.

In a game on Wednesday, New York Yankees catcher Kyle Higashioka launched a run-scoring double off the center-field wall. Oswaldo Cabrera rounded out third, so the Guardians tried a relay shot home.

Infielder Andrés Giménez’s pitch hit Vanover in the head from very close range.

Vanover fell to the grass, getting back to his feet just seconds later. He left the field alone with a coach soon after. The launch was clocked at 89 mph.

The 67-year-old will not participate until cleared by MLB medical staff.

As the ball bounced away from everyone, Cabrera came around to score, making it a two-run double. Giménez was accused of a harsh error.

Vanover had «a pretty big knot», fellow referee Chris Guccione told Atléticowho also noted that Vanover was partially coherent and did not realize he was hit with a ball.

The incident came shortly after Vanover ejected Aaron Boone in the first inning of the game, which the Yankees won 4-3.

Vanover has umpired in the major leagues since 1991 and was the crew chief for the 2016 World Series, when Cleveland lost to the Chicago Cubs in seven games. He has umpired two All-Star Games and was recently part of the 2023 World Baseball Classic team.
