The NBA community was in high spirits Tuesday night after Lebron James He surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the league’s all-time leading scorer, but the Los Angeles Lakers legend used the opportunity to squash his supposed feud with another Lakers legend, Shaquille O’Neal.

Abdul Jabbar joined the «NBA on TNT» team to react when James broke his record, which has stood for nearly 40 years, when he turned the conversation to Shaq, telling him he was always «on his side.»

«Hey, I want to tell Shaq that I asked about you specifically tonight because you felt like I was embarrassing or ignoring you and that would never be the case,» Abdul-Jabbar said. «And you showed them what it was about, the way you crushed every center in the league for a couple of years there. So, I’m on your side, Shaq, never let anybody tell you differently.» «

Shaq responded by telling Abdul-Jabbar that he had never had a problem with him before.

«Hey, listen, not talking to me was the best thing that happened to my career because all I wanted to do was impress you, sir,» Shaq said. «I will never have a problem with the great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. You will never have to worry about that.»

«I love them too and I want them to continue to impress the whole world with our game. It’s a wonderful game,» Abdul-Jabbar said before ending the interview.

Shaq went on to explain during the broadcast that the root of the alleged conflict stemmed from his belief that Abdul-Jabbar never acknowledged him.

«I’m not a sensitive guy, but he never looked at me, never talked to me. So, I thought he didn’t like me. But I’m the type, I don’t get sensitive. ‘OK, you’re not going to talk to me? Look at this.’ So just [carried on].»

Shaq said he used it as motivation throughout his career, but Abdul-Jabbar once reached out to him to patch things up.

“About four years ago, he pulled me aside and said, ‘Man, I read an article where you said I don’t like you. That’s not true, I love you’. And he gave me a big hug, and we’ve been really close ever since.»

Abdul-Jabbar also wrote about his rocky relationship with James in a Substack article published Wednesday in which he apparently took responsibility.

«LeBron said we are not in a relationship. He’s right, and for that I blame myself,» he wrote. «Not because of anything I did, but maybe because I didn’t make more of an effort to get closer to him. By nature, I’ve never been a friendly and talkative guy (as the media was always quick to point out). I’m quiet, shy, and I’m such a devoted homebody you’d think I had agoraphobia.»

Abdul-Jabbar also wrote that he was «delighted» that James broke his record.
