TO college baseball player in Texas was left with serious injuries, including partial leg paralysis, after a stray bullet struck him in the chest during a nearby game during a game over the weekend, his family revealed Tuesday.

Texas A&M University-Texarkana Baseball player Matthew Delaney, 18, is recovering in ICU with a series of serious injuries, including paralysis in his left leg, a collapsed lung and two broken vertebrae, after being hit in the chest during a game against the University of Houston. Victoria on Saturday, Amy Delaney, the teen’s mother, told ESPN.

«I was where I was supposed to be, doing what I was supposed to be doing,» he said of his son, who was shot near the bullpen at Spring Lake Park in Texarkana. «It’s not something we would have imagined.»

According to the Texarkana Police Department, police initially received calls about gunshots in a neighborhood west of the park. Calls from a baseball player possibly shot came in shortly thereafter, and police connected the two incidents.

«Our detectives and crime scene investigators responded to the home on Lynda [Street] and determined that the incident began as a disturbance that caused two men to shoot each other in front of the house,» police said in a statement posted on Facebook. “One of those errant rounds traveled about 400 yards and hit the innocent victim. in the ball field.»

Police said the two suspects fled the scene, but on Monday, 20-year-old Demarco Banks turned himself in. Kamauri Butler, 17, turned himself in the next day and was charged with aggravated assault. Banks was charged with deadly conduct. Both are believed to be the shooters.

Three other people were arrested by police on the day of the shooting on a variety of charges, including possession of drugs and firearms.

Amy Delaney told ESPN that as of Tuesday, doctors still couldn’t remove the bullet near her spine, but said she’s slowly improving and has been feeling tenderness in her leg.
