All Netflix Original Shows and Movies Removed from Netflix

In recent years, Netflix has lost a lot of licensed content, but many may be surprised to learn that some of the Netflix removals have been Netflix Original titles. Here’s the full list of every Netflix Original removed since 2017.

To get to the bottom of why Netflix original titles are leaving, they generally fall into one of several categories.

• Most leave because they are not owned by Netflix. Instead, they are distributed internationally exclusively by Netflix for a fixed period of time.
• Second, it could be temporary or permanent license issues. For example, beat bugs left due to license issues for a short period of time, while slasher it was withdrawn for some time because the owner of the series went bankrupt.
• Third, some titles are time specific. These include New Years Countdown, for example. We will not list them below.
• We also have a new case where original content owners decide to pull their shows as well (often breaking original agreements and therefore costing a lot of money). Disney is remarkably doing that with their Marvel series.
• Finally, Netflix Originals may be removed from some regions due to laws or removal requests. We’ll cover them at the end.

Netflix Originals Removed From Netflix Due To Licensing

Now, let’s go through the list of Netflix Originals that have been removed (we may have missed a few, but we’ll update them over time). This list is sorted by order of removal.

• Nick Offerman: American Ham – Removed in December 2017
• southcliffe – Removed in July 2017
• youhim killing (seasons 1–4) – Removed in August 2018 – Despite reviving the series, Fox opted to put the first three seasons of the show on Hulu.
• Borgia – Removed in November 2018
• no second chance – Removed December 2018
• pompidou – Removed in April 2019
• Rio (season 1) – Removed in October 2019 – Sole international distributor of the BBC series.
• The fall – Removed in October 2019
• Doug Benson: Doug Dynasty – Removed in December 2019
• Stockholm (Season 1) – Eliminated in November 2019 – Argentine series that Netflix took internationally.
• call me Francis – Removed in December 2019
• history of a clan – Removed in January 2020
• Juana Ines – Removed in January 2020
• The Investigator: A British Crime Story – Removed in February 2020
• Happy Valley (Seasons 1-2) – Removed in March 2020 – Another BBC series that Netflix only distributed for a limited time internationally.
• Bubblegum (Seasons 1-2) – Removed in April 2020: Netflix only acted as international distributor and lost the rights after a fixed period.

• Assassin (Seasons 1-3) – Removed in April 2020 – Removed due to bankruptcy of Kew Media Group. He’s finally back though, but future seasons are headed to Shudder.
• Case (season 1) – Eliminated in May 2020 – Chilean Netflix series taken internationally.
• Cannabis – French TV series – Removed in June 2020
• Hotel Beau Sejour – Removed in June 2020
• NSU German History X (Limited Series) – Removed in July 2020
• Russell Peters: Notorious – Removed in October 2020
• Russell Peters vs. the world – Removed in October 2020

We’re told this list will continue to grow exponentially over time, as Netflix doesn’t necessarily hold the distribution rights to many titles within its library.

Netflix Original Shows Removed Midway Through Its Run

There have been two major cases of shows being removed from Netflix internationally. In both cases, it was because they were renewed outside of Netflix.

• the expansion – Netflix has the international rights to all Syfy seasons of the expansion before Amazon Prime Video revived the show and became the new home.
• Star Trek: Discovery – Netflix held exclusive international rights to each season until season 4, where ViacomCBS bought back the rights in favor of putting it on Paramount+ when it finally lands worldwide.

Netflix Originals Removed Due To Government Takedowns

The most famous example of Netflix being ordered to remove content is patriot act with Hasan Minhaj. A critical episode with the regime in the country ordered to be retired in January 2019.

The following titles were removed from Netflix Singapore and have been removed from several other regions as well:

• The Last Hangover (eventually removed globally)
• The Temptation of Christ (eventually removed globally)
• Cook on High
• Disjointed
