New York Yankees Legend Alex Rodriguez is urging Americans to keep up with their health after revealing Wednesday that he’s been diagnosed with early-stage gum disease.

During an interview with «CBS Mornings», the famous MLB slugger shared the news, adding that he was surprised by the number of people in the US who share a similar diagnosis.

«Appearances are deceptive,» Rodríguez said with a smile.

«I recently went to see my dentist and I didn’t think of any gum disease. And the dentist broke the news to me, and then I found out that over 65 million Americans have this gum disease.»

Rodriguez, who recently partnered with OraPharma to raise awareness on the issue, offered his advice: «Get out there and take care of your teeth.»

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 46% of adults over the age of 30 show signs of gum disease, which is the leading cause of tooth loss.

Rodriguez said he didn’t know what led to his diagnosis, but told CBS it was more «prevalent in our Black and Latino communities, especially my Latino community.»
